Sting's concert at Egypt's famous pyramids last night (25 April) was delayed by local
star Hakim who claimed he had been snubbed by organisers. Sting's introduction
to the crowd was interupted by Hakim who claimed it was his turn to sing. Hakim
said, as he left the stage, "Whoever is willing to accept the insult of an Egyptian in Egypt
can stay." Some of the crowd left. Hakim was late for a performance due to take
place an hour earlier. The crowd calmed down when they were told this by the organisers.
When Sting did eventually get on stage he received a warm welcome. He was joined by
Cheb Mami who sang on Sting's Desert Rose. He performed songs from
Brand New Day.
Archeologists repeated complaints that the pyramids and sphinx could be damaged, it was only the
third time a rock performer has been allowed to play there. Sting's current tour has
taken him to Dubai, the UAE and Jordan.
