John Lennon is to be honoured by Liverpool with Liverpool Airport being renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The airport will be given its new title next Spring when a new terminal opens.
It will be the first airport to be named after an individual in the UK. John F Kennedy and Leonardo Da Vinci have both been honoured in this way in the United States and Italy.
The owners of the airport saw the move as a "fitting and lasting tribute" to the star. A new logo for the transport hub includes a portrait of Lennon with the lyric "above us only sky", from Imagine.
Meanwhile, Yoko Ono will be in Liverpool on Monday (2 July) to receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at the degree ceremony to be held by the University of Liverpool at the Philharmonic Hall. She says, "It is a great honour to receive this degree. I am very excited to be returning to Liverpool, a place that has always made me feel very welcome."
