Eighteen months after Drawn From Memory Embrace return with this, If You've Never Been.
Produced by Ken Nelson and recorded in just three months - in contrast to the solid year the band spent on each of the other two long-players - this is the Embrace we've been waiting for. This time they've not worried about 'perfection', Danny McNamara feels that that "the songs sound as good on record as they do in my head."
The opening seven minutes are filled by Over - featuring a beautiful melody that could flow on for hours. Fantastic production, brilliant. And that's just track one of ten.
Wonder - the first single to be lifted from this collection - is track number three. This is the anthemic number which is similar to, but more mature than All You Good Good People. "But if everyone has a shot at the top/and you can't get out the way/it's you wonder will say," are the vocals Danny McNamara sings in this. Also featured is the classic "La, la la..." over the gorgeous production.
Many Will Learn opens as just vocals over guitar, ninety seconds later going into some small-scale production. Soft, slow and definitely not over-produced. This is followed by the more upbeat It's Gonna Take Time which is opened by brass instruments. So there is some variety on this album, even though it flows so brilliantly. Another possible 'anthem'.
Hey, What You Trying To Say opens with a guitar not normally associated with Embrace but does go back into Embrace-mode. This is the 'cool' track on this long-player. Still fits in though.
The (sort-of) title track, If You've Never Been In Love With Anything follows. This is again, very upbeat. More brass instruments.
The album ends with Satellites which opens with some soft keyboard and guitar sounds. One-minute in and a piano is heard. Danny McNamara's vocals come in over this piano. No drums, guitars; just piano and vocal. Three minutes in and we begin to hear some more instruments, still very soft. A perfect ending for this gorgeous album.
The album floats along brilliantly, everything is in its right place. Three albums into their career, recorded in double-quick time, this is 'it'.
