I built and ran this website between 2000 and 2001, combining passion for popular music and programming. It was listed by MTV's now defunct MusicNewswire as one of the then nascent web's top twenty sources, alongside Billboard and VH1. The most exciting part of it — for a 13/14-year-old excited by new music — was receiving scores of pre-release CDs from record companies. The entire project was written entirely from scratch (frameworks and libraries were not the norm back then!) in PHP linking to a MySQL database, with HTML as well as a little CSS and JavaScript for the frontend; the code is available here.

Radiohead - Kid A
26 September 2000 | 0:00:00 GMT/UTC

One of the most anticipated albums of 2000, Radiohead's fourth studio album: Kid A features ten tracks written by the band and produced by Nigel Godrich. No singles will be taken from this album.

Opening the album is the beautiful, keyboard-led Everything In Its Right Place, Thom's vocals have been cut up to create backing vocals in this brilliant opening track.

Following is the title-track, Kid A. A strange keyboard melody begins this track, you hear some vocals (with added sound effects) come in with a 'quick' drum rhythm and later a short bass riff. Another great track.

The National Anthem and How To Disappear Completely follow. An acoustic guitar begins How To Disappear Completely a brilliant track, the best track on Kid A.

Treefingers is the only instrumental track on the album, very calming. Optimistic begins with a short guitar riff, no samples, no eerie effects; more of a live feel. Great track.

In Limbo and Idioteque follow, Idioteque begins with a beat that makes you think of a dodgy dance record, lots of bass, lots of samples, lots of strange effects - brilliant.

Morning Bell has a strange beat (5/4), soft bass, soft vocals, good melody. Ending Kid A is Motion Picture Soundtrack. No drums just an organ and Thom's vocals, this is followed by a fifty-second instrumental.

This is a very experimental album, more so towards the end. Kid A is a good album but not everyone will like it.

4/5
