The first few seconds of this album welcome us to Kelis' world. Why, thank you.
Two years after Kaleidoscope and that "I hate you so much right now" record; we have some, hopefully, more grown-up and listenable music.
Opening with that slow low-punching bass is the opening Intro. That leads very nicely into the first single to be lifted from Wanderland: Young, Fresh N' New. Repetitive bass under Kelis' short but sharp vocals. The catchy chorus is the highlight of the track. Look out for Timo Mass' version of the single.
Popular Thug is Kelis trying to impress the likes of Dr Dre et al. Lyrics include the line, "Make my records skip." Let's do that...track five: Daddy. This has got to be about her father, a nice ballad maybe? Opening lyric: "He has an appetite for sex and cash / He hangs on the corner talking trash." And lots more like it. I don't think this has anything to do with Kelis senior.
Moving swiftly on to a cover of Lou Reed's Perfect Day. Okay, I'm joking, or hoping. This is however opened by lots of guitars strumming away in the style, maybe, of some of Lou Reed's mates. This isn't very Kelis though.
"Hi everyone, my name is Carla." That's the opening line to Junkie. What's this all about? I don't know, and I can't be bothered to work it out. She is young; she's got a lot of time to work on her music.
